Erik Skoldberg / About
The full story
There are artists who fill walls, and then there are artists who create portals of energy.
You walk into Erik Skoldberg’s studio and the first thing that hits you is not quiet. It is motion. Color stacked on color. Canvases the size of walls. Icons half-finished and already staring back. A California surfer who grew up with a paintbrush in his hand and his mother, a studio artist and educator, teaching drawing, painting, and fine arts right at his hip. That early studio education never left. He still layers acrylic the way some people tell stories, until the surface starts to move. Nature, music, sport, and legend all get pulled through that process. Picasso as a gunslinger. Bardot in bloom. Clint. Dolly. A surfboard that can still ride a wave. A piece that pours a shot. The studio is part workshop, part playground, part engine room, and Erik moves through it like a guy who never quite clocked out of being a kid with too much energy and a teacher who showed him how to aim it.
What he wants is simple and huge at the same time. He is not trying to decorate a room. He is trying to change the temperature of it. Collectors from Montauk to Monaco hang his work because it does not sit still. Hotels and developers chase the big ones because a Skoldberg can hold a lobby the way a great song holds the night. Underneath all of that is the same bet he has been making since the beach, if you put enough life into a surface, it becomes a portal. The energy hits you the second you step into his space, this bright buzzing aliveness that doesn’t stay on the wall but follows you out the door. It becomes a happy place you carry long after you leave.
The studio is a working barn, a gallery, a bar and my house at the same time. I would rather show you the work standing in it than email you a PDF, so ask me for a visit.
